Stay in the chic Bleu Huere Palais in Essaouira
Enjoy the view the Medina walls at Madada Mogador

Wild, windy and a world away from Marrakesh, Essaouira is a small hippy town that has grown in popularity and presence since being 'discovered' in the 60's. Famously linked to Jimi Hendrix and his song 'Castle's made of Sand' and Orson Welles, Essaouira is a place for those wishing to swap the hustle and bustle of Marrakesh for the tranquillity and peace of a seaside town.
Once a small and quiet fishing village, Essaouira retains it's charm and peaceful demeanour and the pace of life is relaxed and the locals friendly. The heart of Essaouira is made up of souks and city walls that crash right into the sea below. Still a fishing village it is a great place for those who enjoy seafood and sunshine.
Essaouira has a number of great restaurants and your hosts will be only too happy to recommend where to sample the best local fare as well as some excellent French Moroccan fusion. Beware though many of these restaurants fill up and it's advisable to book in advance, something your Riad will be more than happy to organise for you. There are also a number of cool bars and for those who wish to enjoy early evening drink you'll find a few popular surf bars a short stroll down the beach.
With endless empty beaches further down the coast you may prefer to venture out of the city to discover these than stay on the wide and sandy beach next to Essaouira. Although beautiful it isn't the cleanest and for a more authentic visit we recommend exploring the coast by car. Essaouira is often windy so be sure to bring something warm for the evenings. There are plenty of great Riads and Kasbahs in and around Essaouira and our preferred shortlist we will help you choose the right one!
